The police and the army form joint squad to tackle criminals in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa state police command in collaboration with the army from 177 Guards Brigade have set up a special squad to crack down on criminals suspected to be unleashing terror in the western part of the state.

Speaking to newsmen after a tour of some areas recently attacked by the hoodlums, the state commissioner of police, Abubakar Sadiq Bello said the command is also collaborating with vigilante groups and community leaders to acheieve the desired result.

The western part of Nasarawa state comprises Karu, Keffi, Toto, Kokona and Nasarawa local government area. According to the state police commissioner, the collaboration between the police and other security agencies to check the excesses of the criminals in those areas became imperative following numerous complaints by residents including the recent abduction of the wife of a serving commissioner in the state, and the killing of a popular herbalist called Dr Onakuwa.

The police commissioner explained that the criminals who use the mountains in the area as hideout have been discovered to have links with armed bandits causing havoc in Zamfara and Katsina state.

He revealed that due to the mountaneous nature of the western part of state, the command had requested for a helicopter for effective air survelliance patrol.

The police boss also appealed for additional operational vehicles and other logistics for optimal performance of his men.
