National butchers union to sanction members who slaughter donkeys for consumption

President of the National Butchers Union of Nigeria, Chief John Adu has urged butchers in Delta state to desist from slaughtering donkey as the meat is not safe for human consumption.

Chief Adu who gave the warning at a forum in Asaba said any butcher who flouts the directive will be sanctioned.

He said the national butchers’ union will continue to ensure that only animals safe for consumption were slaughtered in a healthy environment.

Legal adviser to the Delta state butchers union, Mr Okoro Oghenekome reaffirmed the commitment of the body to sanitize the operations of butchers in markets across the state.

“The killing of animals like donkeys will be prohibited. Then animals or rather meat coming into the state should be healthy for consumers. This is also meant to checkmate or forestall the inflow or outflow of cattle or animals that are not healthy for consumption.”

He explained.

Senior political adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Mr Festus Ochonogor said the state government was working towards providing functional abattoirs for butchers as part of efforts to ensure safe and clean environment for slaughtering animals.
