Amidst heated agitations for the dismemberment of the country, the United States of America has provided an opposing view, noting that opportunities abound in the diverse nature of the people and culture that make up the country.
The US ambassador to Nigeria, William Stuart Symington made this known at a reception to mark the 241st independence anniversary of the United States in Abuja.
Ambassador Symington said Nigeria, like the United States was made up of diverse people and culture who have stayed united even in the face of challenges.
“The United States of America is strong because it’s diverse, and it’s strong because all of its diverse people have found a way to work together,”
“It was not easy.”
Ambassador Symington emphasized that the threat to the country’s unity would be overcome with dedicated leaders and citizens which Nigeria was fortunate to have.
The minister of foreign affairs who was represented by the director North America and the Caribbean, Ambassador Vivian Okeke said Nigeria took its cue from the United States in remaining as one entity.
“Nigeria takes cue from United States of America which has been able to bring together diverse people under one nation to accomplish economic, military and scientific feats. As a result, Nigeria has been able to bring her over 350 ethnic groups with different cultures and traditions together to pursue the Nigerian vision.
“We are not there yet, but with the Nigerian spirit we shall get there.”
